Carol has new hours until the Main St. Bridge opens up and also due to her family emergency with her daughter Toni.

Carol's will be open on Wednesday from 9 AM to 7 PM, From 4 PM to 7 PM Carol will continue to run her family night specials for $6.00.

Carol will also be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Carol's will not be open, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Second Blood Drive for Toni Carmichael

Thank you to all who came out for the blood drive for Toni Carmichael. Over 35 units of blood were donated. Carol was overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community. There were so many who wanted to donated and could not get in that the Blood Bank agreed to do another blood drive on April 27, 2009 from 10 AM to 6 PM, please watch for details.

with Glomerulonephritis Perinuclear
Anti-Neutrophil Antibody, a rare disease that
resulted in kidney failure. She has been placed on
kidney dialysis and is currently receiving treatment,
including transfusions of red blood cells and
platelets, at St. Clair Hospital and UPMC Mercy.
Toni is the daughter of Carol and Mark Carmichael.
Her mother Carol is pictured above in front of the
family-owned Carol’s Restaurant in the West End.
Toni and her husband, Dennis, have three children,
Tanner, 16, Dalton, 12, and Cheyenne, 10.
The Carmichael family sponsor many fundraising
events at their restaurant and find it difficult to
accept help from others. Carol said, “My daughter
does need blood, so I guess it’s time for us to let
everybody help us.” This special blood drive is
scheduled to help replenish the community blood
supply from which Toni is using. The drive is being
held on a Wednesday because Carol’s Restaurant
is open until 8 p.m. for what they call “Family
Night.”
Central Blood Bank is the not-for-profit organization
that supplies blood to more than 40 hospitals in
western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and
eastern Ohio.

September 27, National Entertainer, Phil Ventura at Carol's to Benefit Miracles for Marissa

The historic West End has a heart in Carol Carmichael of Carol’s Restaurant & Hometown Sports Deli. Folks around here know you can have a generous home cooked meal at an everyday price, plus a world-class smile and greeting from Carol at no extra charge... But now She’s added to that a mission... which is to raise funds for a phenomenal young lady... a very spunky and brave little girl named Marissa, who is struggling with the complications caused by Spina Bifida... the “Miracles for Marissa” campaign is an ongoing fund-raiser hosted at Carols (410 South Main St. in Pittsburgh historic West End) and powered by area Musicians and Friends who share their talents for the benefit of this sweet and delightful Girl they have all come to know and love.


Along with all of the challenges or recent surgery, the Webb family has had a fire destroying the first floor of their home. A local hometown guy who has not been around in years discovered Miracles for Marissa and has taken the mission to heart.

Carol's Customers Two of Pittsburgh's Finest Inspire New Feature on Positively Pittsburgh Live

Immediate Release, Pittsburgh, July 15, 2008 Well sometimes we start a segment on Positively Pittsburgh Live and then we fill it but this time we are starting a segment because we have some great people to fill it. Last week-end was the Miles for Marissa Bike Run and Family Fun complete with block party in the Historic West End. In order to block off streets in the City of Pittsburgh you must have a permit and to get that permit you must have police security which you have to pay for.

I understand the policy and I understand the security reason but the price was a little exorbitant for a fundraiser intended to make money for a young lady, Marissa Web, who is preparing for her 42nd surgery for spina bifida related illness. Enter two customers of Carol's Restaurant and Hometown Sports Deli on Main St. in the West End. They just happened to be customers who were also members of Pittsburgh's Finest. Officer Ed Dolly from Zone 1 in the North Side and Sergeant Kathy Alexander from Zone 6 in the West End requested time off for the event and volunteered their services.

This is a great example of the Pittsburgh Police Force being not only, "At Your Service" but "On Your Side." Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and the Pittsburgh City Council need to know that not only do they have great policeman in the city of Pittsburgh but great humanitarians also.

Both officers provided a safe and congenial environment for the Miles for Marissa Bike Run and Block Party in the Historic West End on Sunday, July 11, 2008.

"The Dish" Writes about the Dishes at Carol's

Though not exactly new (they’ll soon celebrate their three-year anniversary) Carol’s Restaurant in the West End provided these Dish correspondents with a new experience in local cuisine. Whilst playing hooky from our respective workplaces, we made a short mid-morning trip across the West End Bridge for breakfast.

The West End Circle, of course, is under construction until the end of time (or the bankruptcy of the Commonwealth, whichever comes first); but don’t let a little construction scare you – it’s still a much shorter trip than you think. Carol’s is beyond worth any detour - very affordable, diverse menu, and Carol herself is one of those sweet and friendly types that you just can’t help but love (well, you could help it, but you’d probably be a real jagoff).

The restaurant serves classic diner fare - breakfast, lunch and dinner, and, though we were too stuffed to verify it, the menu also advertises a selection of pies and ice cream for dessert. For our breakfast, the shorter correspondent chose the strawberry pancakes, and received three ginormous, fluffy pillows of buttery goodness, with a side of bacon that was happily eaten by her companion. My choice was the Western Omelet, which was a hefty eggstravaganza with green peppers and onions, and an even heftier side of home fries (made with real, skin-on potatoes) and toast. As for décor, well, the folks at Carol’s are Stiller fans, so there’s a goodly amount of the Black and Gold around, along with many great photos of family and friends (including the small selection of cast and crew from the Kevin Smith movie that just wrapped in the ‘Burgh.)

As the happy little wine bottle on the menu suggests, Carol’s is BYOB, so you can bring a few bottles if you’re there for lunch or dinner (or breakfast, I’m not here to judge). Carol told us that in the fall they’ll be doing weekend Jam Nights with local bands, but don’t wait until then to try some great home-cooked food. Go now, and by the time you leave, Carol will make you feel like you were visiting old friends.

To walk off some of the extra potatoes after breakfast, take a walk and visit some of the new art galleries that are popping up on and near Main Street.

If you have come through the West End Circle lately you will see signs that say West End Circle Construction and various road closures. You may also be frustrated by the traffic but YOU CAN GET INTO THE WEST END to patronize local businesses such as Carol's Restaurant and Hometown Sports Deli.

Yes, the merchant's are struggling and that's why you should support places like Carol's Restaurant and European Treasures which offers outstanding collectibles, and unique jewelry, gift items and cards at reasonable prices, but despite the struggles there is still heart in the West End and lots of it.

You have heard me talk and write about Miracles for Marissa and the jam sessions for her benefit but summer is not a great time for indoor jam sessions so Carol Carmichael is literally taking Marissa's cause to the streets. On Sunday, July 13 local bike enthusiasts have planned a 50 mile run from Carol's on Main St to Mary's Motorcycle Haven in Florence, Pa. The bike run will start off with festiviites at Carol's at 10:00 AM with a clown and magicians and end at Mary's Motorcycle Haven with hot dogs, pop and door prizes, then return to Carol's for music and dancing in the street.

The run will return to Carol's for family entertainment with Acoustic Jamage from 1 to 3 PM and Steve Shaeffer Trio from 3 PM to 5 PM. Jazz trio drummer will be selling and signing his book, "Drummer for the Mob" at Carol's and all proceeds will benefit Miracles for Marissa.

Marissa's 42nd surgery is on July 23 and there are many expenses which are uncovered. West End Wiggles and Rocks Right Along with Carol's

This past week-end was a bit of Main St. Americana in the West End and it did not look as though it was closed as Penn Dot and the Media have been touting. You may have had to walk a little further for parking but it was definitely booming.

The James Center was bustling with a blooming bride and her guest the Gallery was a buzz with an artistic event on Saturday, April 26 and so was Carol's. Carol was entertaining with another episdoe of Miracles for Marissa with a jazz trio on Saturday and Vinnie Pelligrino singers on Friday evening.

What a great place to be on a Saturday night. One new visitor to Carol's commented it was like walking in to a neighbor's house and sitting down for a bite. Fun and hugs abound with Marissa Web in the middle.

News alert about Marissa--265 foot walk this week and she has learned the entire chorus to the Big Bopper's Chantilly Lace. She is now working on the sixties hit, the Birds and the Bees. Look out Pittsburgh her repertoire is building as quickly as her friends.

An architect has taken up Marissa's cause and has volunteered to design her wheel chair ramp for her home and weekly new musicians add their names to the list who entertain in the West End to benefit Miracles for Marissa.

New Steps for Marissa and New Country Rock Friends

Just to update you on Marissa's progress, this week she has walked 230 feet at the therapists and learned a new song with her Karaoke friends: Achy Brakey Heart.
You go, Marissa.

She also had a great time playing her pink guitar on Satuday night at our open jam session with the Tommy Kal duette. Tommy Kal and Chuck are two new young friends of Marissa who play country rock and classical rock and yes, a little barroque. Minuette anyone?

Seriously, these two young men are fantastic musicians and they will be back on Saturday, April 11, 2008. Also they learned some Jerry Lee Lewis songs just for the audience and Marissa. It is still open mic and these two versatile musicians can pick up anything quickly to accompany your singing.

Also they are so into doing good you can check them out at Jimmy G's Restaurant and Catering on Wednesday, April 9 where they will be playing party songs for the ladies and intros for the contestants at the Mr Romance Pageant Auditions. These auditions benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pittsburgh Chatper.
